What does it mean?
Akshaya Patra (Sanskrit: अक्षयपात्र) meaning “inexhaustible vessel”, is an object from the Hindu epic, Mahabharata. It was a wonderful vessel given to Yudhishthira by Lord Surya which held a never-depleting supply of food to the Pandavas every day.

What is it?
An NGO with its headquarter in Bengaluru is called the Akshaya Patra Foundation. Through the implementation of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme in government- funded and government-run schools, their organization works to end classroom hunger. In addition, Akshaya Patra supports children who are from low socio- economic backgrounds in the pursuit of their right to an education and fights against malnutrition.

About its Fundings:
As a result of their collaboration with the Government of India and many State Governments, steadfast support from corporates and well-wishers, they have grown from serving just 1,500 students in 5 schools in 2000 to serving 1.9 million students today. Today, Akshaya Patra is the largest mid-day meal program in the world (managed by a non-profit organization), providing healthful meals to over 1.9 million students in 19,039 schools of 52 locations in 14 states and two union territories of India.
